FSC Board nominations 2022-2023

Each year, FSC's Board of Directors reviews our priorities and upcoming activities to guide recruitment of candidates to join the board. 

In 2022-2023, we are looking for 6 - 8 new board members who share our commitment to collaborative food systems transformation. The Board will continue to steward changes to ensure FSC’s governance is reflective of grassroots voices and the diversity of the food movement, centering Indigenous, Black, and racialized leaders, communities and policy demands; reimagining future membership and engagement; and advancing food policy to create a more healthy, just, and sustainable food system. FSC is continuing to integrate practices of anti-oppression, anti-racism and decolonization and we are seeking board members who can help support this ongoing work.

While directors sit on the Board in their individual capacity (i.e., they are not expected to represent entire regions, groups or sectors), we continually strive to have the board reflect the diversity of food movements from coast to coast to coast. If an organization or network would like to support a particular candidate for the FSC Board, applicants can include the name of the supporting organization or network in their expression of interest. 

We value and will privilege applications from individuals who are rooted in movements for equity and justice, as well as applications from equity-deserving groups (including racialized groups, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ2s+, people living with disabilities, and those with lived experience of food insecurity), who are typically underrepresented on not-for-profit boards.

This year, we are particularly seeking applicants who are Indigenous, and who have experience working with First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit communities. We are also seeking applications bilingual French-English applications as well as those based in the following geographic regions:

  • Atlantic Coast
  • West Coast
  • The Prairies
  • The North
  • Quebec

We will be prioritizing applicants who have strong experience in:

  • Showing accountability to a vision and mission: applying high-level vision to program development and delivery  
  • Bilingual FR-EN environments: fluency in French
  • Financial Accounting: This year the board is seeking an incoming Treasurer with experience in financial planning, budget preparation and tracking. For more information on the Treasurer position, please see the description here
  • Anti-oppression and anti-racism work in organizational contexts
  • Fundraising in non-profit contexts: building relationships with funders and maintaining organizational financial health
  • Cross movement collaboration: Building relationships within and across movements and networks (housing, climate justice, local food business, income justice, food workers and migrant worker rights) 
  • Supporting people and planning in organizational contexts, particularly pan-Canadian, bilingual social purpose environments
  • Social economy organizing, movement building, programming, etc.
  • Non-profit governance, including progressive membership models
  • Food provisioning: farmers, hunters, fishers, gatherers

Candidates who are a good fit with our work will be contacted for an interview with a member of the Nominations Committee (expected dates of interviews in August and September 2022). 

The Nominations Committee and current Board of Directors will recommend candidates for 2022-2023 Board of Directors based on the needs of the organization at this time. Those candidates will be presented to the membership in the fall. Members attending the Annual General Meeting (date TBD) will vote to approve the slate of candidates proposed by the Board.
