Active Working Groups:
- Food Sovereignty, The People’s Food Policy Project - contact Cathleen Kneen, Eric Chaurette, Moe Garahan <cathleen(at)ramshorn.ca>, <echaurette(at)interpares.ca>, <moe(at)justfood.ca>
- Indigenous Food Sovereignty: Considering the irreparable damage that has been done by settler communities to the food systems and livelihoods across what is now known as ‘Canada’, FSC-SAC and all committees should have indigenous food sovereignty issues integrated as part of their work. Concern about the word ‘Canada’, to be addressed further by the indigenous food sovereignty working group. Contact: Dawn Morrison, BC Indigenous Food Sovereignty Working Group <dawnm(at)cablelan.net>
- Urban Agriculture - in connection with the Metro Ag Alliance on Urban Agriculture, a focus on urban and peri-urban food production - contact Rebecca Schiff, <rebecca.schiff(at)uregina.ca>
- Green Jobs - contact Andrea Peart, <apeart(at)clc-ctc.ca>
- Carbon costs and Climate Change Action: work on a 5-year plan to look at the carbon costs of gathering people together at a national level and develop guidelines to address the costs along with the value of bringing people together - contact Jen Cody and the BC Food Systems Network: <jenandbearit(at)gmail.com>
The following groups have been proposed but are not currently active. If you are interested in one of these or would like to propose another working group, fscadmin [at] foodsecurecanada [dot] org (subject: FSC%20working%20groups) (contact us).
- Fisheries: FSC understands food security to include fisheries and other forms of food harvesting as well as agriculture.
- Diversity: to be proactive about providing diversity education at FSC assemblies and to work towards more diverse representation on the steering committee and throughout membership. Note that by “diversity” the motion is referring to multi-ethnic, multi-racial diversity; note also that this is to be a focus of the whole organization, not just a task of the Steering Committee.
- Poverty
- National School Food Network: to support participation in non-partisan child and youth nutrition curriculum and health initiatives
- Canada's Food Guide: to enhance the Guide and participate in its development to ensure that environmental sustainability, social justice, and seasonality be included in the next iteration
