UN Right to Food Mission to Canada
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food has announced an official country mission to Canada, set for May 2012. Civil society groups from across the country were invited by the Special Rapporteur to provide suggestions as to what priority issues he and his team might consider for investigation. A decision was made to produce a joint civil society submission for collective impact, and a Coordinating Committee including Food Secure Canada was struck to support the process. An update on the mission will be provided as soon as possible.

Federal Court rules that the Harper Government broke the law in abolishing the Canadian Wheat Board
On Dec. 7, 2011, Justice Campbell of the Federal Court issued a declaration that the Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz, acted in breach of his statutory obligation to hold a plebiscite of farmers before abolishing the Canadian Wheat Board's "single desk" mandate for marketing wheat and barley.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Council of Canadians, Food Secure Canada, and the ETC Group (the "Interveners") were given public interest standing in the applications for the purpose of addressing important international trade and constitutional questions raised by the Minister's actions. The Court's decision repeats and adopts the Interveners' submissions on these two key points.

The Greed Revolution
A new ETC Group report, The Greed Revolution: Mega Foundations, Agribusiness Muscle In On Public Goods, documents the growing influence of agribusiness on the multilateral food system and the lack of transparency in research funding.
The report points to a dangerous trend that will worsen rather than solve the problem of global hunger.
It shows that multinational corporations are now seeing their future profitability in “emerging economies,” and they are finally taking notice of the international institutions that have been quietly working throughout the global South for half a century. However this new interest in UN agencies is causing “mandate-muddle” as companies demand that policy be rewritten to better reflect their interests.
New Trade Deal May Put a Stop to Local Food
The NFU has a great campaign against the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the free trade agreement that the Canadian government has been negotiating with the EU. This agreement would effectively put an end to local procurement, threaten the organic and supply management sectors and would allow corporations to seize the farms and freeze the bank accounts of farmers who are alleged to have infringed on their intellectual property rights. To learn more about it, check out the NFU website, download their report Why We Don't Want CETA, and sign their petition.
The Council of Canadians has also been very vocal on this issue. You can read more about it here and take action here.

The Case for Urban Agriculture will be Heard
History Made in Montreal
A coalition of Montreal-based organizations has just made history by collecting 25000 signatures, 10000 signatures more than the number required, to bring the issue of urban agriculture to public hearing. This is the first time that enough signatures have been gathered to bring a specific topic to public consultation, and could open the door for advancements to be made in the area of urban agriculture.
